I thought I had a similar problem in that, I could get sound when running from a live-cd but not on the install/upgrade.
All settings were the same as were loaded modules, alsamix settings and kmix as well.
Took me an hour to discover that in the mixer settings of kmix you have to click on the little green led-like lights above the volume sliders to unmute them. :-P
