Hey Conrad,

I just had the time to read section 6 of the document you pointed me at. My
first guess was right: What I was looking for doesn't have anything to do
with scim. It all can be done with a the alt-intl variant of the us keyboard
layout. In a shell I only had to issue the following command:

$ setxkbmap us -variant alt-intl -option compose:rwin

and everything works fine now.

Now, "o gives ö, 'e gives é, Alt Gr+e gives € and so on. Great!

Now the question is where to place this command as I do not want to edit the
global /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Any ideas? Or is there an administrative tool
for kubuntu or KDE that does the trick?

So now I don't need scim for that. But it would be interesting if it would
work with it somehow, too.

Thanks,
  Christian
