sudo mount /dev/hda -o remount,ro
This will remount hda read only. (if hda is not your root then change
hda to what is)

That would only work if you had the md5 sums of (all) the programs when
they were working,
but it's more likely to be something reiserfsck can fix, or a config
problem.

Look in /var/log/kern.log | syslog | messages , maybe also kdm.log
most logs are going to be in /var/log anyway.
