In /etc/fstab you'll have a line like:
/dev/hdc    /media/cdrom0    udf,iso9660    user,defaults,noauto,ro 0 0
Just change "user" to "group" and add the users you want to be able
to mount it in to the group /dev/hdc belongs (cdrom).

I use k3b from the deb package and it looks fine for me,
maybe try changing the theme in settings?

5. Don't use the beta, but maybe a bug?

Try adding the line
kwin
to ~/.xinitrc

I don't use IR but maybe take a look at:
/usr/share/lirc/lirc-modules-source.conf.tpl
or if you get stuck you can always download the package from
Debian and extract the .conf file your self, it may even woek with
Ubuntu's version.
