Spell check in Kate

Terence, thank you very much. I did reset the machine, and now Kate's
spell checker works. I very much appreciate your help.

Just a few questions. First, where is the custom dictionary, so that I
can back it up when I reinstall? Second, I see that I have to add
common strings such as php, html,... basically all the code and markup
tags. Should these words not be in the dictionary already?
