Newbie's install questions -- first of all video

  No....you didn't install kubuntu at all...I have put it on several machines 
and NEVER had it do that.

 Have a look at the /etc/X11/xorg.conf there is a help file in there that 
tells you how to reconfigure things. Also visit www.kubuntu.org and read the 
FAQs

   It sounds like you haven't downloaded kubutu at all but have downloaded 
debian an are now iunstalling the second disk. Don't mix debian and kubuntu 
they will sometimes work together but some things are just not compataible 
and they will break your system.
