I had the same problem.  after checking that I had aspell and aspell-en 
installed as recommended, I had to set a setting somewhere within the KDE 
control panel (Kcontrol), but I can't remember where and I don't have time to 
search for it right now.  (email again if you can't find it and I'll look it 
up when I have more time)
