SOLVED I hope:
I found in the /etc/default/wpasupplicant file the following command:
OPTIONS="-i ath0 -D madwifi -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -w"
I changed it to:
OPTIONS="-iath0 -Dmadwifi -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -w"
and now my wireless works. Evidently in the newer version of wpa_supplicant
the spaces are not acceptable for the -i and -D options. They seem to work
for the -c option. We'll see the next time I reboot.
Oh, I also noticed that there is no S##wpasupplicant in either /etc/rcS.d/
or /etc/rc2.d (default runlevel for Debian based systems).
Could anyone give me a hint what start level, (and if there is one, Kill
level) I should start this daemon at (in other words, rcS.d/S36wpasupplicant
or /etc/rc2.d/S12wpasupplicant or whatever other S## it should be)? I'm
running Dapper BTW.
