Here you either need to change "static" to "dhcp" or add static
address/netmask. Since dhclient helped, you have DHCP properly configured on
your router, therefore just change to "dhcp"
pre-up /sbin/ifconfig eth0 up # line maintained by pppoeconf
I am not sure why this would be required for ethernet connection. I would
expect that your router is doing PPPoE login, therefore you do not need to
specify this on your systems (displaimer: I used PPPoE only once ;-))
iface eth1 inet
Do you have two network cards? This one is not configured as "auto",
therefore it will not come up by default.
