I have done the same as you and worked like charm.  :)
Make only sure to have linux-386 (or linux-k7 as i use) installed.
Apart from that, all other things were detected and set up right during
bootsequence here.
My upgrade was from AMD Athlon k7 700MHz to AMD Sempron 2200+ (1500MHz).
Both on Via Chipset.
