freeze at shutdown when using fglrx display driver

When using fglrx driver  I get this freeze every time I shutdown or restar the 
computer using the KDE menus: 

the screen goes blank, the keyboard - unresponsive, I don't see the typical 
dapper shutdown messages. I have no idea at what stage in shutdown process it 
locks this way. I have to push force shutdown button to get it halt.

This is not the case if I run „sudo reboot“ in the command line - then 
everything goes fine. 

Where do I start troubleshooting? Maybe somebody knows why this is happening?

I am running dapper, radeon 9200  card, 8.26.18 fglrx driver debs generated 
from ati installer.
