Ah, thank you for that, much easier than reading Forth programs!
In fact the only lines not commented out are just below the #prepend line and 
include :-
"request . . . .  domain-name servers . . . . ."

I have changed the gateway config by entering DHCP info but can find no 
network configuration that works with Ubuntu, though I have yet to edit that 
prepend line.  Everything is AOK under Mandriva.

More digging needed.
