SCIM and other language characters -- documentation?

At the moment it's stable here... I don't know why... I didn't fix 
anything... But I guess updating probably changed it...
I tried to follow this link advices...

I didn't put other languages than chinese...

And after few reboots my keyboard didn't work as french but english 
though fr was the config...
So I unintalled all and installed back only scim and xim softs....

I got few problems with gaim (gnome apps) but now everything is in 
order... Unfortunatly i don't know why...

the control + space works perfectly but i often get it on when typing...
because too quick using shift + space too...

But i must admit my config is working much better than in xp now...
Specially I had to change njstar every 30 days... lol
But as I could get rid of xp I am very happy :)
kub is the first linux distro I found "ok"... And as I don't use gnome 
too much i don't want to have two managers (not i disliked gnome) i have 
been using it for years... but i want only a manager...

All of this messing around with mixing and matching locale settings 
seems like a bit excessive. Surely my prefered setup of en_GB-UTF8 for 
everything should be fine? After
  all if I must change locale settings just to be able to read and input 
a different language (in this case chinese) it completely defeats the 
point of having a UTF8 locale in the first
place. So what gives? Why do I have to change my locale en_GB-utf8 to 
zh_CN-utf8 when I try to view a chinese website, or I decide to do some 
writing in chinese. This is completly
baffling for me... UTF8 is UTF8 is UTF8.... right?
