Nope, I don't have a "System Services".  However, given that the icon is a
traffic light, I'd have to guess that it's just a way to invoke ksysv -
which I do have.  Anyone know what hoop I have to jump through to make that
show up in kcontrol/System Settings?

Well, I _do_ have that, have always had it.  It's not enabled to run at boot
time.

So now I have sound, and it doesn't seem to need alsa-utils to be running,
anyway.  Sound continues to be a mystery to me...
