I also found a curious default setting in Gentoo where all the volume
levels were set to zero.  This could be just Gentoo, but just go
around and make sure they're not at zero, since that's what happened
to me.  I was prepared to wage a long and drawn-out war, even make my
own sound driver.  Then BAM!  Sound was there, whole system was happy,
and haven't needed to hear anything from it yet.

That's what happened to me.  Go to KMix to see those settings.  Good luck!
