Finally! I found an unrelated bug - and an inaccessible local ubuntu mirror
- that forced me to download a couple of .debs from packages.ubuntu.com and
install them with dpkg. Any time I do that I do an "aptitude -f install"
to check any dependencies and it needed to install 'libavahi-core3' and
"avahi-daemon" and finally it's all fixed.
I'm not sure why they hadn't both been forced by the prior installation of
libavahi-client3, but it must be a problem with aptitude rather than avahi.
Thanks Jonathan.
