Konqueror- is there a way to restore normal functionality?

Don't forget that you can create a root superuser,  just by giving him 
a password.  After that you don't need all that sudo nonsense.  That 
method was chosen so that new users couldn't easily damage the 
system.  Without a mod to some file,  X won't let you log on as root,  
but you can log on as root in any console screen to fix something. 

You can su to root in Konsole,  or put kdesu ahead of Kate etc in a 
menu to have kate open with root privileges.
