What's up with /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libthread_db.so.1 ?

malloc() errors tend to be the result of poor code somewhere. Usually
something like a null pointer dereference or trying to write to memory that
hasn't been initialised etc.

I would - the worst thing that could happen is the bug report is ignored and
the situation continues (unlikely). Or the developers could ask you to try a
few things to resolve the problem. Bug reporting is an important part of the
F/OSS development cycle and a great way to contribute!

That does make bug reporting more difficult, but not impossible. Try to keep
a log of what you're doing at the time for a few weeks/months and see if you
can pick a trend. If not - send it with the bug report; you'd be amazed the
sort of trends you can pick when you know the internals of the software! :)

I had all sorts of problems with "artsd" on my AMD64 workstation. In the end
I just ditched it and reconfigured everything to use ALSA directly. Seems
KDE4 will use a totally different sound system (GStreamer from what I've
read). My point is, there might be a work-around you've not seen.

Good luck with it all :)
