changing display resolution

Folks,

How do I change the screen resolution?  The ONLY selection I get is 
640x480 and 60 hz (System->Preferences->Screen Resolution). I know that 
my Samsung SyncMaster 760V TFT is able to do much better than that.

I have just completed my first Ubuntu installation and am very happy 
with the way it went with the exception of the screen resolution problem 
and printer recognition (separate topic later).
