Starting/ Stopping Apache

Mark, after each command, I still have no server response.
root at ety:/etc/apache# /etc/init.d/apache2 start
root at ety:/etc/apache# /etc/init.d/apache2 status
root at ety:/etc/apache# /etc/init.d/apache2 stop
* Stopping web server (Apache2)...
root at ety:/etc/apache# /etc/init.d/apache2 stop
* Stopping web server (Apache2)...
And "stop" seems to 'stop' the service even when it is not running.
