sound driver

I have just loaded 5.10 onto a Dell optiflex G11 450 l+ which I was given by a
firm upgrading it, it was used as a "thin client" and so I have installed a
4.5G hdd.

During the installation there was a warning about the sound car (which seems
to be on the motherboard).

Now 5.10 seems to be running ok apart from sound. I get the warning:

"informational message
soundserver informational message
devic.dev/dsp can't be opened no such file or directory
the soundserver will continue using the null output device"

and sure enough the cd plays with no sound.

As I am remain fairly unfamiliar with Linux command lines I am unsure how to
proceed.

Is this likely to be a hardware fault, the installation program not having
recognised the particular sound card or simply a missing file that I can
download and put into the required directory?

Or should I load 5.04 which seems to work ok on the Dell I am using?
