Access to repositories

  The procedure using apt-get suggested by D. Michael McIntyre worked 
fine after I eliminated "us" from the locations specified in 
/etc/apt/sources.list as suggested by Earl Violet.  Thanks to both of you.

Thanks to Rashid ul Islam for suggesting KMenu > System > Adept.  I had 
assumed that KMenu > Add/Remove Programs would take me to the same 
place, but such is not the case.  I seem to be up and working now and 
will be able to download the software I need.
