Access to repositories

I've been happily using RedHat 8 for several years.  I have a spare 
laptop (Toshiba Satellite L25-S119: Celeron with 60 Mb disk) and I 
installed Kubuntu 6.06 LTS from a Canonical DVD.  I like it and the 
installed applications seem to work fine.  I can access the Web or the 
file system using Konqueror.  Kppp connects me properly.  Kmail works 
fine as does Open Office 2.0.

I'm not sure, though, that everything that I need is actually there. 
 Although there are various gcc 3.3 and 4.0 libraries and other files, 
there appear to be no gcc executables.  When I access Adept Installer 
via K Menu => Add/Remove Programs, the list of programs displayed 
remains pretty limited whether or not I change from "KDE" to "Any Suite" 
and check "unsupported" and "proprietary software."  The categories 
"development" and "science" remain empty.  I'm not sure how to determine 
just what ought to be there.

On installation, all the lines in /etc/apt/sources.list were commented 
out with the header:

I uncommented the lines in sources.list that ought to give me access to 
the main repositories, the universe, and the multiverse with no change. 
 The options in the pulldown menus for Adept Installer are limited and 
lead me to believe that Adept Installer is not "seeing" the connection 
to the Internet.  The path Help => Adept Installer Handbook doesn't 
bring up the Handbook.  My Adept Installer is Version 2.0 Destroyer.  My 
KDE is Release 3.5.2.

I reinstalled Kubuntu from scratch and the results are the same.

Any thoughts?
