Best is to use headers, as you said.

The config.h file gets created at the beginning of the compile, so one
could start and cancel the kernel compile at the right time to just
get it. But why bother?

Just install and use the headers, that´s what they´re for: compiling modules.

P.S.: Renaud, could you please let us know what hardware is not
supported out of the box by Edgy on your motherboard?
