I recently had a computer die and put the HD in a mew
machine, Although there are probably numerous ways tto
do this I used dpkg to install the configure-debian
package. then without ever even TRYING the GUI I used
"sudo configure-debian" to completely reconfigure
ubuntu on the new system.

although it DID leave behind configurations for a non
existant nic etc, that needed to be deleted It DID let
me configure KDE Gnome new nics graphics card etc etc
quite easily from a menu driven program.

You MIGHT have to get the configure-debian package
from another computer of course as you need this to
configure things. I dont know if it is on any of the
distro CDs. I already had it on aonther computer in
the apt archives.
