USB printing

While I'm not technically savvy, I can report that I've been using an 
USB-connected HP DeskJet 5940 for a few months now on a Kubuntu 6.06 
(Dapper) box without any problems.
It would seem, then, that at least Kubuntu does support some USB printers.
Could your difficulty stem from a possible printer driver inconsistency?
