Some ideas:
open kmix, turn on ALL of the LEDs.
Try headphones
lsof /dev/dsp <-- see if a program is hogging your card.
I had a friend bring over his kubuntu box (tuesday?) because it had no
sound: "I worked for a day or two after you were here... then
nothing."
Ya, it was muted.
