Not totally sure. It's a Pentium 4 based system with sound
built into the motherboard. Let me know if I need to open the
case to look at motherboard model numbers or the
numbers on what may be a sound chip, or run any other
probes etc to find out.

lsmod info included in the previous email.

The dmesg output on Kubuntu is included as is
the modprobe.conf file for the Mandriva OS install where
sound works is included below if this helps.

Regards,
Richard

The Mandriva /etc/modprobe.conf (where sound works) contains:

=======================================================
# This file is autogenerated from /etc/modules.conf using
# generate-modprobe.conf comman
d

remove snd-intel8x0 /sbin/modprobe -r snd-pcm-oss; /sbin/modprobe
--first-time -r --ign
ore-remove snd-intel8x0
install snd-intel8x0 /sbin/modprobe --first-time --ignore-install
snd-intel8x0 && { /sb
in/modprobe snd-pcm-oss; /bin/true; }
alias sound-slot-0 snd-intel8x0
install usb-interface /sbin/modprobe ohci-hcd; /sbin/modprobe ehci-hcd;
/bin/true
alias eth0 sis900
blacklist audio
blacklist snd-usb-audio
=====================================

This suggests the sound driver that works there is snd-intel8x0 .

I've included full dmesg output below. Most relevant lines are copied
