One interpretation of what you say may suggest that you believe that
the basic 'Desktop' CD will not do this?
For the record, Desktop CD is a live CD which (Kubuntu) has an
'Install-me' icon on the screen when it is run. Clicking once on this
icon will start the installer. I believe one of the choices for
automatic installation is to resize the existing windows partition and
co-exist.

This can be done automatically if the Desktop CD is used (see above)

This is taken as accepted. If you do not have a reliable and tested
backup (even for everyday use), then there are the every obvious and
significant risks. Failures really do happen. I had two hard drives
fail last year, in guarantee. If you do any changes, particularly with
partitioning, there is a risk - not of small loss, but of major loss
(like losing everything), even if the risk is small. For windows, also
do a good scandisk and maybe defrag too, first.

That is the Desktop CD! (Version 6.06)
Try using this first (if my above guess is correct)?

I used the previous versions (5.10), I think the alternative CD
retains similar methods and menus etc. Even though I was not a total
newcomer to linux, I was unfamiliar with Ubuntu/Kubuntu, I had some
difficulty finding my way unaided around the menus to do anything non
standard.
