DVD Playback Problems - No Sound

Two parts to this problem:
1) I have no sound. This is unusual, because I used to have sound, and
now I don't. The only error message I've gotten was that Xine couldn't
load any drivers of some sort.
My sound is integrated into my ECS NFORCE 3-A 1.0-A motherboard. It
uses the Realtek AC '97 codec, I think. I'm not sure. I tried telling
the KDE sound system to use ALSA, OSS, T-OSS, and everything else, but
it still didn't work.
Any ideas? I checked and I do have the kernel restricted modules
installed. I don't know if they're active though.
2) Even before the sound went south for the winter, I had no DVD
playback.
I tried Okle and Ogle, but they both quit with no error messages after
the legal notifications (those paragraphs telling you you'll be hunted
in every country except North Korea and China by INTERPOL if you pirate
this disk). Kaffine and KMplayer were kind enough to tell me that it
couldn't read a NAV packet, whatever that is.
I looked and tried to find a DVD codec or something that I could
install, however, I didn't find anything. Using Synaptic Package
Manager, I also tried right-clicking on all the playback software to
see if there were any missing required or reccommended dependencies.
There were none.
I'm stumped. I'm also surprised - DVD playback works on my Gentoo
laptop just fine, but my wireless card doesn't. My wireless card
worked on Kubuntu, but now DVD playback doesn't. Go figure.
Anyways, I'd really appreciate any help anyone here could give me.
