I would start off looking in ~/.kde/share/apps/akregator for a lock file.
It was refusing to start after a crash I had, and I found that to be the
problem. Akregator does not like to crash nicely.
If you want to backtrace crashes within KDE (its not all that useful except to
developers) you need to install gdb.
Personally I am not much of a fan of Kontact, and prefer to run without it, so
all my apps run from the panel.
