ATI fglrx driver and shutting down

I get a similar problem on my desktop.  Sometimes, instead of turning black, 
the splash screen comes up mangled and freezes.

I have found that if instead of shutting down from the GUI, I switch to a 
virtual terminal and do a "sudo reboot" or "sudo shutdown", everything works 
fine.

I use the ATI drivers, but I am not sure the problem started after I installed 
them.  I don't reboot my PC very often, so it took me some time to notice it 
was even a problem.
