If you would like to automatically run a command/script on a hal event, the
program "ivman" is what you would need.  By editing a config file or two,
and setting ivman to run whenever you boot, you will have automounting for
your usb flash device.  The gentoo wiki has a pretty good description and
examples of how to use ivman to do what you are looking for:

You can install ivman via apt, so just skip all of that part and go to the
subheading entitled "A Few Example Rules".  If you need further help, please
