Couple of suggestions...
First, try "System Setttings" under the K menu, then go to "Network Settings", and finally select administrator mode (use your user password at the prompt). If you're reasonably facile with Windows, you should be able to figure out how to enter the correct settings for your LAN. (Make sure you select the option to restart your wireless connection at boot time.)
If that doesn't get you there, try the wiki (www.ubuntu.com/wiki). There are a number of useful HowTos there.
One other thought...if your machine is older, your wireless card may not be supported under Linux, but you can probably post to this list to see if anyone else has been successful. Also, if you have an older card that is supported under Linux, it may not work with IPV6 enabled (newer protocols), in which case you'll have to inactivate...search for IPV6 on the wiki.
