KDE 3.5.4 bug

I went through the same thing. I don't know what happened or how it got fixed, 
but, but I works for me now. Perhaps a recap of what I did might help you.

Day 1: Upgraded to KDE 3.5.4 and the fonts started to look non-anti-aliased. I 
tried to try out different sub-pixel hinting settings. Found a setting that 
made it better but not perfect.

Day 2: New updates were available for some xorg and gtk-related packages. 
Fonts started to look weird again. Kinda smeared with green/red colors around 
the edges. Didn't look more into it.

Day 3: Some new updates to KDE. Went back and tried to other sub-pixel 
hintings. Once I turned off sub-pixel hinting everything was back to normal.

So, if I should give you any tips, see if there is any updates that needs to 
be downloaded, play around with sub-pixel hinting and perhaps a restart of X.
