I had the same problems. My first solution was to install all gstreamer 
releated stuff and use the gstreamer engine in amarok which worked. After 
reading the thread mentioned before (with the link to the RestrictedFormats 
wiki) I installed the libxine-extracodecs and the akode-mpeg package (not 
sure if both are needed) and now amarok works with the xine engine also.
