Despite this being posted to the Kubuntu list, the original poster mentioned
Ubuntu. If this is the case, use the gnome terminal instead of Konsole.
Both Konsole and gnome terminal are command-line shells.
Also, to play certain types of media, one needs to enable certain codecs
which are not always redistributeable. See the
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RestrictedFormats page for details on how to easily
install these extra packages and codecs.
