How to check logs for connection attempts...

Hello List -

This is my first post so bear with me. I am lucky enough to work in a
company where we are allowed to use Linux on our desktop boxes.

What suggestions/tools would you all make for checking my log files for
connection attempts by folks on our internal LAN. I work with a fun team who
tend to be practical jokers so I would like to begin a habit of monitoring
my logs etc. for friendly cracking.
