kdm starting apps, even non KDE environments

I am switching between different environments (KDE, Ion, Icewm), and
would like some application started everytime I log in.

I'm looking for the most generic solution (ie that would work in most
situations, eg if I decide to not use kdm anymore).
My fist hope is ~/.xsession, but it doesn't seem to be used when
logging in with kdm.

So, what's the correct way to do it? I would prefer not to edit the
/etc/X11 files, and only change files in my $HOME...
