sound on Mac Mini ???

Having fallen foul of VPC7 I decided to install Ubuntu 5.04
on  a "stray" Mac Mini I happened to have lying around
(Yes, really) - looks lovely, really lovely: doesn't sound
awful because there is no sound - cannot even get a volume
control icon onto a panel!

I am obviously even goofier than I thought . . . 

Please "de-goof" me with regard to why Ubuntu PPC 5.04 is
not letting me play tasteless music CDs.
