I'm not sure this matters.  I've been trying to use "none" for the last
couple of days to debug a problem on one of my servers, and it appears that
if the server advertises TLS, kmail will use TLS.  I _could_ be wrong about
that, because I'm not certain I'm doing things correctly :-)

My ISP tells me that too - they lie.  In fact, they support SSL and their
server advertises TLS (but they haven't bothered to get a valid certificate
for it).

No.  The only advice I've ever seen is "install ethereal".  I did that
yesterday, and I still don't know what I'm seeing :-)
