Kiosktool and KDEDIRS on Kubuntu?

Hi!

I usually use Kiosktool [1] to configure the desktop of my users. I
then have a third party tool that sets the KDEDIRS environment
variable to include the directory where kiosktool has placed its
profile. 

This doesn't work with the KDE that ships with Kubuntu 5.10. KDE
version is 3.4.3-0ubuntu5. Any ideas on why?

Assigning profiles via Kiosktool's "assign profile" feature works, but
I don't want to use that, it doesn't fit well with the rest of my
desktop configuration system.
