Hello list:

I am having a most odd problem with my "Breezy" machine. It seems that
after changing the root password to my system, I cannot no longer
authenticate myself once my machine has been locked by the screensaver.

I feel the problem is in my changing of the root password because of the
following sequence of events:

1. I had an install of Breezy that had this problem, but did not suspect
my changing the root password.
2. I decided to install larger hard drives in this machine and decided
to do a clean install over imaging the machine.
3. The new and clean install of Breezy had no problem until.....
4. I changed the root password.

The authentication log yields the following information:

11/11/2005 05:25:25 PM	localhost	unix_chkpwd[11411]	check pass; user unknown

11/11/2005 05:25:25 PM	localhost	kcheckpass[11402]	Authentication
failure for jmcq12345 (invoked by uid 1000)

11/11/2005 05:25:25 PM	localhost	kcheckpass	(pam_unix) authentication
failure; logname= uid=1000 euid=1000 tty=:0 ruser= rhost= user=jmcq12345

Other processes such as sudo work just fine. I suspect that the problem
is in kcheckpass, but have not found much luck searching the internet on
this topic.

BTW... the reason why I changed the root password is that I firmly
believe that the password to the most powerful account on the machine
should rest in the mind of the machine's administrator. I am a firm
believer in sudo and would only use the root account in an instance of
catastrophic failure with the machine.

That aside, anything that would get me pointed in the right direction
would be appreciated.
