Record & sound

I have sound working and can hear my Mic in my speakers when I tap on it. When 
I try to use sound recorder or set up messanger for on line sound I get 
"Could not open resource for writing." I am using Kmix and a "Ensoniq Audio 
PCI" card. Thanks for any help.
