No recorder

When I try to use "Sound Recorder" after recording the window reads "Could not 
open resource for writing" What does that mean. Also Gnome meeting shows 
everything is set up correctly but when I get to "test audio" I do not hear a 
playback. Otherwise the sound is working.  Thanks in advance.
