Cant't help with the respawning, but if the Ubuntu Live CD works for you
just use that to install a "server-only" Ubuntu system, then when that is
installed and net access is working, use apt to go to kubuntu with "apt-get
install kubuntu-desktop".  The Kubuntu CD makes it easy, but you don't
actually need it to get kubuntu up and running.  You can install kubuntu on
top of a base ubuntu system.  In fact, if space is not a problem, you can
actually have both installed simultaneously, they aren't mutually
exclusive.
