Network howto

I recently moved from a kubuntu-upgraded-over-Debian system to a pure Kubuntu
install. Previously, my /etc/network/interfaces used to do all sorts of
initialization - restarting my caching proxy (polipo), my firewall rules
(guarddog), and starting a mail run (masqmail). Now, I can't put any of that
into /etc/network/interfaces, because kubuntu start-up seems to rewrite that
file. So eth0 is being handled by hotplug: can anyone point me to a good
how-to? It would be really nice if the network plugin for kcontrol would
handle this sort of configuration (as iirc it is done for ppp in kppp).
