Live Disk Help

I am thinking about using Kubuntu and downloaded and burned the live ISO.  I 
booted it, it went all the way through and detected everything, then no 
graphical screen came up.  The last line was ...$ .   Could there be a 
problem detecting my monitor which is a Samsung SyncMaster 710--pretty basic.  
Or am I missing a login id/password?  Any suggestions would help.
