You could try sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg.  That works for some people.  
Also, I usually need to CTL-ALT-Backspace to kill the X Display Server after 
I monkey around with X.  The GDM/KDM usually just restarts itself in a could 
seconds.
