The presence plasmoid allows you to control whether you're online, away,
etc.  Which (AFAIK) isn't built into m-i. It also makes using KTp a lot
easier to use, as it acts as a sort of "dock" for the contact list. If you
do add it to the default setup, I would add it into the system tray, rather
than in the panel.

If the plasmoid isn't running the contact list gives a warning when you
first close saying "you're closing the contact, you will still remain
online and have nothing to show you this. Add the plasmoid!".  (the wording
is slightly different, I can't remember what it is exactly).

tl;dr: Adding it to the default would be really useful.

The outstanding issue with message-indicator (
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=303473) is going to need to be patched
downstream. With my KTp hat on, it's your message indicator duplicating
stuff we do - and we can't remove it as not every distro uses m-i, so
there's nothing we can do.
Last time it was discussed we did have a plan on how this patch could work,
I think it's in the ML thread linked to on the bug report.
